Palatal Expansion
An oral expansion (palatal expansion) device is often used in the first phase of an orthodontic treatment. It will shorten and simplify the upcoming second phase. This preliminary treatment consists of widening the dental arches to re-establish balance and harmonize the upper and lower jaws. Expansion is often needed to create space when teeth overlap or to correct malocclusion.
It’s important to schedule an orthodontic consultation for your child around the age of seven, so your dentist can see how well his or her teeth are erupting. Early detection of potential complications allows us to treat or curb problems as they develop, such as temporomandibular joint disorders (TMDs) or premature tooth wear.
Whether you need an orthodontic examination or if you just have a few questions, rest assured that everyone at Centre Dentaire des Îles will be happy to assist you.
