Gingivitis vs. Periodontitis
Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gums that can easily be prevented with proper dental hygiene. Brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing daily will remove the plaque that causes gingivitis and cavities. If your gums are swollen or if you notice bleeding while brushing, schedule an appointment right away to prevent complications.
Periodontitis often results from neglected gingivitis, though it can also be caused by heredity or disease, such as diabetes. It occurs when bacteria grow in the periodontal pockets. This disease affects both the gums and the supporting tissues of the teeth. If left untreated, periodontitis causes bone loss and teeth to come loose. Periodontitis is one of the leading causes of tooth loss in adults.
Schedule an appointment right away for a preventive check-up or if you notice bleeding gums or moving teeth.
