Temporomandibular joint

Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD) are common and affect a wide range of population. But did you know they can be treated by your dentist? TMD symptoms can cause discomfort and even affect your daily activities. Most people are unaware that their dentist can effectively treat TMDs. Since your wellbeing is our top priority, we will take the time to make an accurate diagnosis and devise a treatment plan that addresses the cause of your discomfort.

Most common symptoms of TMDs:

  • Clicking, popping or grinding noises when chewing or opening your mouth
  • Severe headaches
  • Jaw pain
  • Neck pain and vertigo
  • Teeth grinding (bruxism)
  • Intermittent ringing in the ears (tinnitus)

At Centre Dentaire des Îles we use the following state-of-the-art technologies to address temporomandibular joint disorders and alleviate symptoms:

  • K7 (occlusal assessment) : This technology allows the dentist to measure the occlusal muscle function and provide an accurate diagnosis for a custom treatment plan.
  • E.M.G. (eight channel surface electromyograph) : Surface electrodes are used to take accurate measurements of the masticatory muscles by sensing the electrical activity of up to eight muscle sites.
  • T.E.N.S. (transcutaneous electrical neural stimulation) : This technology delivers a soft stimulation to the muscles to promote complete relaxation.
  • Dental T-Scan : This device is used to analyze the points of contact between the teeth as well as their position and intensity.

TMD symptoms are often aggravated during periods of unexpected or prolonged stress. One of the most common causes is poor occlusion (misalignment of the teeth). Surgery is not always the solution. Many treatment options can help realign or adjust the teeth to provide relieve from headaches, jaw pain and dizziness.

Another trigger of TMD is teeth grinding, which usually happens when you sleep. This condition causes premature tooth wear and can even cause more serious problems, such as tooth mobility.
